We’re down here on the other side of the equator, but we’re still excited to celebrate the beginning of the President’s second term especially on the day when we remember the struggles of those who fought for equality not so long ago. We still have a long way to go and some would argue even further to go in many ways. Really, just like I don’t think an individual can ever say “I’ve finished improving myself”, I also don’t believe there will ever be a point when we can truly say we have an equal or perfect society . But we must remember how far we’ve come and how far the generations before us have come and be proud. Perhaps most importantly, we (my generation) must remember that equality and justice is an ongoing fight that we must continue together. Even though it’s a long road and often times bumpy and slow, we can and will make the journey together without, for the most part, fear of persecution or death. And that’s something to celebrate.
So here’s to our democracy and the fight ahead! And a very happy MLK day to you all!
